Five common mistakes made when cleaning your patio.

I’m sure I’m not the only person who didn’t know that you can do a lot of damage to your patio if you aren’t careful and don’t know what you’re doing. Even though you may think your patio can take just about anything, it can’t. After researching, I have managed to narrow it down to the five most common mistakes when cleaning your patio.

So, let’s begin:

1. Overuse your favourite tool, the pressure washer.

It’s always the first tool we reach for when considering giving our patio a freshen-up for that party at the weekend.

Now while the pressure washer is good for the first clean of the year, it’s not advised to use it too regularly as it can leave it looking worn and tired. Not a look any of us really want for our external feature as we use it for all our summer gatherings.

2. Using the wrong cleaning solution.

It doesn’t matter what type of slabs you have.

If you use incorrect cleaning solutions, you can do irreparable damage.

Using bleach in your cleaning cupboard is tempting, but it will leave some slabs looking Patchy.

Also, be aware that some patio cleaning solutions you can buy aren’t good for all types of stones. If in doubt, do a minor area or call your friendly patio cleaning company and ask for their advice. We really would be more than happy to help you if we can.

3. Not treating stains first.

The best option is to clean your spill up straight away to avoid staining, but sometimes this isn’t possible.

The longer a stain is left down, the harder it will be to remove.

Many people make the mistake of not spot treating the stain before trying to do the clean.

It may not work, but it’s always the first thing to do. If you’re having problems, call your local patio cleaners.

Now, they might not be able to do anything to help, but they probably stand more chance than you do with home remedies and equipment.

4. Not rinsing the cleaner off properly.

After applying cleaning solutions to the surface, you must always ensure you rinse as much off as possible. If you fail to do this, the cleaner continues to work, which causes your patio to look dull, not a pretty look for your next party.

5. Neglecting to use a patio sealant.

So many people forget to seal their patios after cleaning, which leaves them unprotected. Protecting them will extend your patio’s life and keep it looking shiny for longer.

Always check you’re using the correct sealant for the type of material your patio slabs are.

Relaying sealant is recommended after every clean or at least every few years to keep your patio looking beautiful and in the best shape.
