Hey you! Lovely to have you here again if you’re one of our regulars — and a big warm welcome if this is your first time visiting. Go on, grab a cuppa (we’re big fans of a tea break), and let’s talk about something that often gets overlooked but makes a huge difference to your patio’s final look — jointing sand!
If you’re browsing because you’re planning a patio cleaning and sealing service, or you’re just curious about the finishing touches we offer, this one’s for you. We get asked all the time about the sand we use between the slabs — particularly, “Do you only use one colour?” Spoiler alert: nope!
In fact, until I started asking questions myself, I didn’t realise we had multiple colour options either… every day’s a school day, right?
If you’re short on time and just need the key info, scroll straight down to the section: “What type of sand we use.” That’s where you’ll find the full scoop on the colours. But if you’re happy to stick around for a bit, I’ll walk you through our patio jointing process, a short video of a real job in action, and a few bonus blogs to look at afterwards.
Why choosing the right sand colour for your patio joints really matters
When it comes to patio sealing and finishing, people often focus on the cleaning, the jet washing, and the sealant… but the colour of the jointing sand? That’s the detail that can either tie everything together beautifully… or look a bit odd if it doesn’t match your patio’s style.
Using the right jointing compound for patios and driveways can enhance the look of your paving, highlight natural stone colours, and even make the whole surface look newer, sharper, and better maintained.
It’s especially important for customers who’ve spent good money on a premium finish or materials like Indian sandstone, limestone, or block paving. The colour contrast — or blend — you choose can really elevate the whole space.

What type of sand we use
We use a specially formulated jointing compound called Easy Joint… a premium, resin-free and cement-free sand alternative that’s ideal for patios, garden paths, driveways, and other outdoor hard surfaces.
Why do we love it so much? Well, it’s:
- An all-weather compound (yes, even in the unpredictable British weather!)
- Backed by years of product research and ongoing development
- Designed to reduce the risk of staining or hazing when applied correctly
Easy Joint is an industry-leading choice for patio jointing because it delivers strong, clean joints while being flexible enough to resist cracking. And when applied by trained professionals (that’s us!), the results look sharp, natural, and long-lasting.
What colours of sand do we use:
The three colours we use are:
- Mushroom
This sand is a light brown with cool tones.
- Buff
Buff is a slightly warmer shade of brown with a golden sandy mix. It’s very similar to the mushroom.
- Basalt
Grey and black colours make up this shade, and this is our go-to for your beautiful Slate patio however you can also use it with whites, greys, blacks, and browns as it is a very adaptable colour.
These are the colours that we generally use. There are a few others. However, in all the years we have been doing this, we found that these three are the most common. Always ask if there is one we don’t do all the time. If we can help we will!
If you’d like help deciding which sand colour will best match your slabs or if you’re unsure what finish would look best with your patio, our team is always happy to advise. You’d be surprised how much a little detail like jointing colour can change the look!
And don’t forget — there’s a video and a few helpful blogs below if you’re in the mood to learn a bit more.
Until next time, happy patio planning! ☕🧱
