How often should you clean your driveway?

Before I go too far, I will be covering:

  1. How often should you clean your driveway?
  2. Why should you clean your driveway that often?

How often should you clean your driveway is a good question! And with the rising cost of living but wages not so much, this can be tough to answer. Especially with the way all our bills are rising, this cost seems futile.

I have learnt through all my research that this isn’t so. You see, most people invest a great deal in features outside their homes. At the end of the day, your driveway is the first thing people see. You want it to look good.

And whether it be block paving to concrete, cobblestones to the tarmac ones, when we invest a lot of money, we want it to last if it can.

1. So, how often should you clean your driveway?

I did a bit of a search and found that, in general, I found cleaning your driveway was recommended at least once a year. The beginning of spring is the best time. Get it ready for all the family and friends BBQs you’re going to throw.

Suppose you could have it cleaned every three months. That would be even better. Once per season, you won’t want to have it done in the winter, so doing it just before will push it to the spring again.

I also saw the best thing to clean your driveway is a very powerful pressure washer, at least 1000psi was the recommended pressure. And for this, the best thing to do is to call in professionals. They usually come with high-tech equipment, whereas your home-brought ones typically only work at 350-400psi.

They also know how to not damage anything around the driveway, it’s very easy to damage flower beds if you don’t know what you’re doing.

2. Why should you clean your driveway that often?

Driveways see a great deal of action regularly. Tyre marks, footprints and paw prints can quickly make them dirty, which will soon build up. Driveway cleaning is very often the last thing a homeowner thinks about when it comes to their list of repairs to do or general home maintenance.

The following are the reasons why you should, though:

  • Your Safety, and to make it safe for others.

When you don’t clean your driveway, things like mould, algae, grime, and dirt start to build up, and before you know it, your Safety and others are at risk.

Mould and algae make your driveway very slippery, and that increases the chance of you or someone else having a fall. Some may say a fall isn’t that bad, but if you are elderly or even fall incorrectly, it could be detrimental to them.

Dirt and grime sticks to the bottom of shoes. Therefore, you and everyone else that comes to visit is walking that all over your house, which is not great for allergies.

  • It prevents causing damage.

Having your driveway regularly cleaned means you prevent too much damage in the long run. If you don’t wash it for a long time, you may have to put more force than you would if it was kept on top and could risk damaging that way.

  • Keeping your driveway clean stops weeds.

I’m sure you all know the dark, dark days of tackling weeds over and over again. Yes, we’ve all been there. I don’t have it with my driveway, but I do with my patio. Well, having it cleaned or pressure washing it yourself will remove any weeds and stop them from growing back so quickly. See, the crack in your driveway will collect dirt and gives the weeds a place to take root and thrive.

  • Adds value to your home.

I’m sure we all agree that a clean driveway looks way better than a dirt one. It also greatly impacts the sale of your home as appearance is everything to a new homeowner. Having your driveway pressure washed, especially if it is a professional, will freshen up that driveway and add thousands to the value of your home, as it can make all the areas around it look so much better.
